Why Goodenough?
Goodenough uses on average 2,400,000 kWh electricity per year
and on average 7,000,000 kWh gas per year
This corresponds to an annual emission of 1,500,000 kg CO2.
This corresponds to 2.5 tonnes per person in Goodenough.
An average Ethiopian person has a carbon footprint of only 0.05 tonnes per year.
So we emit 50 times as much CO2 as an Ethiopian!
In fact, we are emitting the CO2 equivalent of an Ethiopian town of 30,000 people!
And this calculation only involved electricity and gas from Goodenough – the figure should be approx. 20 times larger when we take into account flights and transport, food, clothing and luxury consumption and waste disposal!
It is our responsibility as academics, artists and musicians, as people who live and work here to be leaders in creating a sustainable future. All this can be achieved with minimal disruption to our current lifestyle, we can easily save a lot of energy and decrease our carbon footprint.
